Friends and supporters,

We are running out of time! Following the U.S. House of Representatives’ budget that reflects $715 billion in Medicaid cuts in May, the U.S. Senate is now deliberating even larger cuts to Medicaid that would be even more debilitating to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). They plan to vote on the measure prior to July 4. That’s why we need your voice now!

While both chambers are calling for additional work requirements, and both mandate more frequent eligibility checks, the Senate’s proposal goes further. It would also limit Medicaid provider taxes, which allow states to collect additional federal funding. We know that these changes would adversely affect people with IDD, even if the current language doesn’t specifically target people with IDD. Eighty-six percent of Medicaid spending supports people with disabilities and older adults, and it is not possible to avoid cuts to services that are critical to these groups.

If the Senate bill is passed without significant changes to restore Medicaid cuts, it is likely that home and community-based services would be among the first to be cut. This would cause providers to close and would likely cause an even more significant shortage in direct support professionals (DSPs).

We know you care. We know because you are reading this message. The proposed changes, if enacted, could very well directly impact someone you love. The only way we can stop this is by taking a stand together.

We are asking you to contact your senators. Hearing from constituents like you is the only way they know what matters to the people they represent. It is critical to use your voice to speak against these cuts and changes to Medicaid.
